So... is God testing us to see if we will ignore all the evidence around us, in favour of whatever stories we happened to be told as a child? That seems very strange. Why does he want to spend his time with these people, and not those that come to their own conclusions?

If that's all he wants, he could have just created a load of people around him that are programmed to believe anything he tells them without question, and bypass this whole ludicrous theatre.
