The trade war between China and United States is ultimately a war between trump’s political clout at home and Xi JingPing’s political clout in China.
Much as trump wants to play the dictator, Xi Jingping is a real life professional dictator and apparently uncommonly talented at it. The US is not yet accustomed to rolling over and playing dead at the approach of any would be dictator. In China, there has been a Darwinian process over 2000 years in which anyone who does not roll over and play dead at the approach of a competent dictator, dies.
In the US, there is no living memory of real widespread hardship. The rest of the world laugh at the “great” recession of 2008. In China there is living memory of privation unimaginable to most Americans.
In America, militia bozos play at war. In China there is living memory of civil war in which millions died and governments are overthrown by large armies besieging cities. In extremis, China will remain regimented and obedient to central authority in return for stability for far longer than the US.
Ultimately, Xi Jingping is already by law president for life. Barring major political upheaval in China, he will last longer than even the worst american nightmare about trump.
I don’t think trump will win this one in the end.
