China doesn't want a trade war. Just like NK doesn't want a nuclear war. They rely on the US being the 'adult' of the situation that says "Well now, this is bad for everyone. So we'll back down." With nuclear tensions high, Trump called Kim's dick small on twitter.
From China's perspective, it looks like Trump just steering the world economy into the ground is on the table. That's a great bargaining position.
