I think the tariffs could have been a good thing if we had a competent president who worked on smoothing things over instead of bragging about it on twitter and acting like he's some paragon of manliness for having set them.

You've got it backwards.  The crazy motherfucker gets the concessions.  

No he doesn't 1) China with the balance of trade surplus have the whip hand. The US need the goods, while there are plenty other countries which China will sell them to. 2) Look where the tarriffs are hitting the US, all items China can source elsewhere but all goods essential to the Midwest economies. China have hit Drumpfuck country deliberately knowing it will only hurt Drumfuck himself (same tactics were used by the UK to great effect in the 1930's economic war with Ireland).
