I'm not surprised at all to find out that the Pope may have said there is no hell. He's always saying similar things, like atheists can be redeemed by doing good, or "who am I to judge the gays?" Maybe the Pope said it to try to make everyone happy. Those who are against the idea of hell will like him more, and he has plausible deniability for those who want to believe that the Pope still believes in hell. Maybe that's why he chose to say it in an interview that was not being recorded.
More plausibly, he was misrepresented and/or quoted out of context.
Maybe, but why would the Vatican then need to lie about an interview even taking place? Why not just tell us what the Pope really said or meant to say? I don't think the interviewer accidentally misrepresented what the Pope said. I think that either the interviewer is telling the truth, or he's just plain making things up to slander the Pope on purpose.
