BUT, It is a bit fucking cartoonish in a SOAP OPERA WHEN, instead of doing a screen shot of a text message on the device, you put a bubble graphic up as if it were the Coyote holding up a sign saying "Yikes".
That is as annoying to me as the "first down" graphic in the NFL...... NO IT IS NOT ON THE FIELD.
The only time you put bubbles up in a show or movie is when IT IS A COMEDY!
IT LOOKS FUCKING STUPID! If you have a dramatic "text" convey the screen on the device, as it would be looking at it yourself. DON'T PUT UP A IMAGINARY BUBBLE, IT LOOKS FUCKING STUPID!
To be honest, having the latest technology in media in general does kind of irk me, if only because it dates it immediately. Case in point, Kieslowski's Decalogue is an excellent series, ten stories, one based around one of the Ten Commandments, and holding up remarkably better than one would expect something made in the days before Communism fell in Poland. Seriously, it feels like almost every story could happen in Chicago today (at least if you ignore that the death penalty has been abolished in Illinois, so 5 loses its power.)
The one exception to this is the first one: "Thou Shalt Have No Other Gods." In this case, the God is a computer. And the computer is probably the best the Eastern Bloc could buy in 1988. And except for an early attempt at making a Smart Home in a Warsaw tenement flat, it just does some physics equations I could probably program into my TI-83. It's still good, but you can really tell when it was made. It's nowhere near as horrible an example as a lot of things, but it's why I prefer to not put new technology in my stories.
