What GC and other theists of his ilk do not realise is that in science the evidence comes first and hypotheses are derived from it, then tested with more observations and evidence that eventually forms a theory if correct.
So he is completely incorrect when he says:

Scientists are creating hypotheses about bodies that have been measured (e.g. the intensity of light dips as the body passes in front of the star). They do this based on what they know about things that can unequivocally be measured, such as the atmosphere of the planet as the light changes as it passes across the star and comparing it to what we know about our own planet. From this they can draw hypotheses about what has produced the atmosphere. For example if it suggests an oxygen rich atmosphere, it is indicative of life. But if not, at the very least it has water.

Quote:There is evidence that extrasolar planets can have an atmosphere. Comparisons of these atmospheres to one another and to Earth's atmosphere broaden our basic understanding of atmospheric processes such as the greenhouse effect, aerosol and cloud physics, and atmospheric chemistry and dynamics.
Whereas the religious mindset is the reverse. Instead of starting with observations and evidence and building hypotheses and then theories from it, they start off with a claim and selectively look for evidence to support that claim.
