If it had happened to you as it did me you would be rejoicing to this day, I'm the one sorry because you are missing out on an incredible life.
More likely I would have realised that the brain is a finely balanced complex system with different parts actively competing with each other and that it is also responsible for interpreting sensory input so you can hear and see things.
Tell me, was your experience at night / morning as you were falling asleep / waking up?
I had a religious experience the other night

If there’s a God, I want to see Him. It’s pointless to believe in something without proof, and Krishna Consciousness and meditation are methods where you can actually obtain GOD perception. You can actually see God, and Hear Him, play with Him. It might sound crazy, but He is actually there, actually with you.
So by meditating he kept himself persistently half asleep while immersed in an environment of God imagery so that his brain would interpret random noise that would otherwise be inhibited as a religious experience.
Or he could have saved himself the effort and taken hallucinatory drugs. Saying that, he was a member of the Beetles so probably already had a history of doing so, which would have trained his brain to make it easier for him.
