There's an easy way to remember the difference.  Christianity is a religion.  Each sect of christianity is a cult.  The same is true of other faiths.  Take egyptian religion (since it;s been in thread).  Theres the total body of that faith..and then the cult of set, the cult of isis, etc.

This is why one protestant group may employ counter-cult ministries against other protestant sects..or catholicism.  I think that it;s ironic, that everyone in every cult thinks that everyone else is in a cult...and they;re all completely right about that.

The cults in christian religion puts particular emphasis the seeking of particular favor from one authority or another, and  deny or minimize other authorities in the wider belief set.

There is not necessarily any doctrinal conflict between sects.  The might be compared to the cult of various saints in Roman Catholicism.

That would be an example of an order within a cult.  

Christian sects are in doctrinal conflict with each other.  The Egyptian counterpart might be the worship of Atan under Atanatan vs the worship of classical Egyptian pantheon including the likes of Horus, Ammon and Isis.

Egyptian sects were often in doctrinal conflict with each other as well.  Supplanting and replacing each other as the tide of history came in and out on their various groups of adherents. In the process, altering each other and even combining. Religion is, among so many other things, an expression of a continual power struggle. Christian or egyptian.
