They spent forty years wandering in the desert. Back then, people didn't live much longer than forty years, especially overworked and underfed slaves. Meaning the people who left Egypt, and the people who got to the mountain, weren't the same group of people. If the story actually happened, which it most likely didn't.
The people in the bible seem to be cartoonishly stupid and needy, though. Like those commercials where someone has trouble operating a blanket.
