I use to think the SAME thing!
Till I saw myself doing the same things over and over. (just like the jews.)
I've look at Christ in the eye I've had an 'messenger' lay out my life and what God has planned for me I've felt the blessings of God where I have been given far more than what my station in life is usually compensated for. and I've been rewarded in supernatural ways. healing/sickness taken away, protect from a burst appendix saw me through an Hiv and cancer scare, been given money by strangers out of the blue who 'felt God urge them to do so.' and still I sin, still I complain still I get scared when things don't happen on my time table... Just like the jews do. Which means a signs and wonder based relationship is not what God wants for us to have with Him. or at least that can not be the foundation. Sings and wonders will come but not before you can use the bible and identify who the gift giver is by the type of gift and it consequence and the ability to give it back if the gift is not of God.
Understand what I mean here.. We will never be greater than the jews who doubted God despite all that they saw and experienced first hand until we yield to Him..
Believe it or not the 'science' defence is not a new one. just replace the word 'science' with the name of any other God and you have a viable defense to explain away what you do not want to hear or see about the God of the bible. That is all the Jews did. loo at what they did with the spoils of egypt as soon as they were parked a few days when Moses went to speak with God. The built a golden calf to thank that God for delivering them from egypt.. Why? because no one had heard of the God of moses, and despite all they saw they simply explained away all the God of moses did and gave credit to "science/the golden calf" they had always worshiped. Sound familiar?
No matter what God does now it is identified by science as a known or unknown phenomena and dismissed.
In short the jews were as smart as we are, and like the jews we learned to redirect praise from God, and give it to anything we want to worship over God of the bible
