Cunt somehow evolved into a very insulting and derogatory term here in the US, compared to the UK where I know it's not quite as offensive. I've heard a few female friends say that's the insult they hate the most.
But there are a lot of differences between UK English and American English.
Pussy just sounds better. It flows off the tongue easier than cunt, which sounds like a grunt one makes after getting beaned in the face with a soccer ball.
