In France, one can get married in a church, but the secular authority will still require their authorization for it to be legal. The same is true in the US, except that the gov allows churches to officiate at weddings. My wedding certificate says, in effect, "Mr and Mrs Fireball are married by the named priest, who is duly authorized by the gov". As Rev Rye has pointed out, one can be licensed to marry people by the state, regardless of the religion (or the lack thereof). The RCC has limits? Who knew?!
If I recall my early religious RCC training, unbaptized babies end up in some sort of in-between place called Limbo. Sending a newborn to hell is possibly beyond the pale, even for the RCC.

Yeah, I mean I was literally counting the seconds as they ticked by, and with each second I was more horrified that the (presumed) mother just stood there. She didn’t even try to comfort the baby.😞 Perhaps she was the godmother, but still.
Yeah - if anyone ever tried to lay a hand on any of my kids, I'd probably sit in jail with an assault charge because no doubt, I'd do to them what they did to my kid.
Disclaimer added to show that while I am absolutely horrified at the thought of anyone harming my child, this post should in no way, be used against me in future threads should a topic come up that would cause certain individuals to quote mine it for their own agendas, whatever they might be.
