Body fat is what's most important when it comes to cold weather.
And, and by way of contrast, the Boers have lived in South Africa since the mid 17th century without getting any darker. Escaped slaves were transported to Canada via the underground railroad in the 19th century but they haven't gotten and lighter.....although some do play hockey.
