One word, Tizh: Compartmentalisation.
That said, Trump always seemed to be far more interested in condemning the (admittedly, frequently irritating and occasionally morally questionable) left than the actively dangerous Neo-Nazis who probably helped swing the vote in his favour.
It's dangerous, to be sure, but compartmentalisation is probably an inevitable part of being human. Most people don't take it to the extremes seen with racists, but the structures that allow us to do so, the way I see it, are built into our minds, and the only people who I've met who don't do it are too young to talk. Why, yes, That does suck.
