I had the numbers run when I retired at 62. I collected less SS benefits until I turned 65 last year, but the lines for the amount collected for each case cross over at 81 years old. I'll be surprised if I live to see 81. Given that only one male in my father's family lived past 58 (that one to 64) I started collecting my Social Security money earlier rather than wait. I could die tomorrow, for all I know. For example, I got clipped in a hit-and-run while on my bicycle. Just the handlebar, but could easily have been worse. Also, if the SSA goes under (unlikely, but still) I will have collected more of what I put in than otherwise.
If I had retired at 65 instead, my quality of life could have been way worse. I was pretty burned out.
