Even when there is a threat involved? If it was just a case of following because you think it's somehow a good way to live your life then fair enough, but it isn't is it? Christians want to be saved, Christians want others to be saved, live your life this way or else! And for what? Judging by the massive response to my original question from believers, nobody knows for what.
I think a person can only go so far if they are living a certain way for the sole reason of avoiding something, and not because they truly desire goodness and truth. As it is with all things, if you don't love what you are doing, you are bound to fail at it at some point, in some way. A person should follow Jesus because they value, and have a real desire for, goodness and truth.
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."
