Yes, it is unfortunate. I can only apply the principle of least harm. I think it’s also reasonable to assume that the amount of suffering felt by plants, if any, is considerably less than for animals due to the lack of a brain or central nervous system. Even if it isn’t, then I’m still causing less overall by eating them directly.
And as you say, there are unfortunate side effects of the business. I can only do my best. I don’t have any choice, in fact, as I would be physically unable to eat meat at this point. I can barely stand the smell of it.
