Of course people pity Melania because pity for the powerful has become a key tenet of Trumpism. Time and again, Trump and his allies find room to express sympathy for the powerful, the wealthy and the privileged at the expense of their victims. Donald Trump is gradually chipping away at notions of fairness, rules, transparency, and accountability for the powerful and privileged because rules are what keep the marginalized, the poor, and the outnumbered from being destroyed by the dominant in-group. For Trump, who views the world in zero-sum terms, the powerful are constantly being held back from exercising greater domination over the country, and norms of justice and equality are standing in the way.
So we have cases like nearly 3000 people died in Puerto Rico as a direct result of Hurricane Maria, Trump managed to feel that he had been victimized. Or when Trump initially remained quiet when Christine Blasey Ford stepped forward, Trump eventually went on the attack against Dr. Ford and the other accusers, expressing doubt about the allegations and sympathy for Judge Kavanaugh. Another example is Betsy DeVos' plan to put guns in the hands of teachers is essentially a measure to accommodate the NRA but Trump's team implies that innocent teachers and students, who have been murdered in their classrooms, were somehow to blame because they were not armed.
So Melania is simply employing tactics from her husband's team.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"
