I think that most believers who take solace in that aren't doing it because they actually believe that smart people (or scientists) believing something makes it true or even credible. Obviously, this one doesn't believe in what many of those smart religious scientists assert and can even demonstrate to be true, namely... fucking biology, lol.
They do it so that they don't confirm any nascent suspicions they have or to handle dissonance from accusations that they must be complete fucking idiots for believing this silly shit.
This isn't a thought that could escape them..since they commonly see believers in other silly religions as complete idiots who believe in silly shit. It makes them feel better not to be the only person in that room. If some other person, some smarter person, some better educated person...could believe in the same silly shit....well, even if it is silly shit, they don't have to be a mouthbreather to believe it.
Good enough for god and government work.
