Yeah, they still do that. Only men.... blatant discrimination. The first thing that has to happen, is that everyone should do something.
They don't then, have to all volunteer for combat.
You're conflating selective service/ conscription with volunteering to serve.
But, sure, I'm in favor of having women required to register for selective service when they're 18. The US hasn't had a draft in over 40 years and it has little chance of being resurrected so it would be symbolic, anyway.
It could, however, help women gain equality in other arenas of US society and it's about damn time for that. So yeah, bring on selective service.
