Yeah, they still do that. Only men.... blatant discrimination. The first thing that has to happen, is that everyone should do something.
They don't then, have to all volunteer for combat.

You're conflating selective service/ conscription with volunteering to serve.

But, sure, I'm in favor of having women required to register for selective service when they're 18. The US hasn't had a draft in over 40 years and it has little chance of being resurrected so it would be symbolic, anyway.

It could, however, help women gain equality in other arenas of US society and it's about damn time for that. So yeah, bring on selective service.

I actually "conflating" nothing. I am well aware of the difference.
I suggested everyone should be required to serve, and if people want only volunteers FROM the already serving "everyone" set, then fine.

Yes, I re-read your original post and didn't quite understand it the 2nd time. And I'm sorry, I don't quite get your very last point above. But no matter. I'm on board with whatever brings equal rights for all and it sounds like you are too.

If it's beneficial to the society as a whole why wouldn't you want everyone to do it? Seems like it's more selfish than selfless though, and societally I'm down with the benefit to the greater good being a team approach

I think the military is horrible for society.

I also think every American who has “served” in a foreign war or conflict should be punished as a war criminal. So we’re not on the same page. At all.

Don't you think it might be important for them to have..you know, actually committed war crimes?  Just a thought.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. Lol I'm a war criminal. You're a regular genius---far before your time, shame.

My job opened my eyes up to how much good civil service does for society. There was a New Deal program called SSURGO, where people were paid by the government to sample and classify soils nationwide. Farmers use SSURGO data to this day. I cannot imagine this "government handout" occurring today.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

Well, I was down there in the engine room helping deliver the mega-baby burning nukes that haven't been used since '45. Not feeling a lot of guilt. #pogueservice Razz

They'd contract it out to Monsanto who would use the data to sue farmers for using their dirt!

No. I think they should be treated unfairly to deter young people from enlisting
