I would be in favor of a modest hike in gasoline tax (maybe $0.50/gallon) if the revenues were put into tax credits or rebates for those who buy electric cars.
I can see both sides.
Electric cars with practical range are still expensive because of the cost of producing the batteries. They are simply out of the range of many consumers. So we don't want to put too much pressure on people who simply can't afford to go electric.
On the other hand, battery-electric cars are clearly the future. We MUST go there - the sooner, the better. If it takes government manipulation of economic incentives to force the issue, that's what we need to do.
The data is in. We MUST get off of fossil fuels. The wide-spread adoption of battery-electric vehicles is a major component of doing that. We NEED to do it. If it takes government manipulation, so be it.
