So what is weird about a girl wanting to be celibate. Given, it may not be the norm these days, but does that make it wrong? What is wrong with their dad making a vow to protect their daughter? Is it something to be offended by? If so, why? I'm sure having a ball isn't necessary, but I can also understand why it would be useful since it adds an extra value to that vow, because it is tied to a formal event. Kinda like a dad declaring his son a "man" so he declares it during a ritual with his tribe. It gives it a feeling of being made official.
