There is no such thing as an 'atheist extremist'.
How would that even work? "I really, REALLY disbelieve gods exist!".
It seems, everything you want to blame on 'atheist extremism; (Soviet totalitarianism, for example), actually had nothing to do with the disbelief in gods.
Soviet Communism was extremist, for sure. But its extremism was caused by bad dogma, not atheism. All they did was replace the bad dogma of an infallible god, with the bad dogma of an infallible State. Their problem wasn't that they were too skeptical or rational, their problem was they were way too close to being a religion. It is minds operating on the bad software (bad dogma) that causes extremism, not lack of belief in gods.
There is no line that can be drawn from, "I disbelieve in gods" to, "therefore I will become a mass murdering totalitarian dictator". This is disproved by the 2 facts, that there have been many theistic mass murdering dictators throughout history, and there have been atheist leaders who have not been mass murdering dictators.
All atheism is, no matter how much you believe otherwise, is the disbelief in the existence of gods. Full stop.
All the other baggage you are trying to load onto atheism, is ue to your own misconceptions.
You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.
