"The overthrows" were the maccabean revolt. Daniel, you see, is set in the context of a folkloric hero of the 6th century, but daniel has two narrators, one supplying those details consonant with that personage..and another writing closer to 160bce who is ignorant of what any "daniel" of 600 bce would have been very familiar with. The second narrator is the one that you think was engaging in prophecy, and a prophecy about some christ and some catholic church, no less!
The irony here, is that the maccabean revolt was a response to precisely those pagan heresies creeping into jewish society that would one day become your religion. Mazel tov!
