Instantly hooked on fantasy until a couple years later when I discovered John Brunner and switched over to Sci-fi.
I've never gotten deep into sci-fi/fantasy books, but I still read them on occasion. Maybe 15 years ago, I got into The Pit Dragon Trilogy because I remember there was a cartoon about it when I was a kid. If you haven't heard of it, it's the series where the boy raises a mute dragon to fight in the pits with other dragons. Of course normally the dragons were measured by their roar, so it was assumed he would him and his dragon would fail, but they didn't. Not only that, but the dragon demonstrated that it could be merciful to other dragons it had defeated.
