They've gone the other way, entirely. They didn't do this awhile a go..or complete the process..it's what they're still doing - defining themselves by an outlier demographic opposed to the democrats voting bloc. Defining themselves into opposition of the very idea, lol. Hoping that motivation will hold back sheer numbers long enough to cash in..and then out.
John Boehners a weed salesman..now, just something to consider.
The GOP rejected the ideology of inclusivity that it had cultivated in preparation for this demographic shift when it was completely annihilated in the primaries by rabid nativism.
I encourage you to read the article that I linked to in the OP. Ernst was on Trump's shortlist for VP. The article implies that she was offered the spot, but turned it down. She is the first woman to represent Iowa in the senate. She is the senate's first female combat veteran. She's recently single and rather attractive (yeah, I just decided to throw that in there).
I think that she's the Republican's best chance in 2020.
She has a (possibly frightening to some) sense of humor:
Ernst received widespread attention for a campaign advertisement she released in March 2014 where she employed a tongue-in-cheek comparison between her experience castrating pigs and her ability to cut "pork" in Congress.[31][32] Many found the ad to be humorous[33][34] and it was spoofed by late-night comedians including Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Colbert.
