I answered as much as I know about pranksters and that is that I only know that Shaq joked once about it, but for the rest of them I can't say that they're joking. Especially since flat Earth is something that is present in holy books like Quran and Bible and we all know that people are ready to believe in anything, no matter how stupid it is, as long as it is in the holy book they worship.
For instance, here an art critic Waldemar Januszczak explains how Muslims adopted Quranic worldview of flat earth into architecture and how Muslims consider that shape to be super holy.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"
