I don't doubt there aren't some dishonest opportunists who fake to be FE just to make some money appearing on shows. For instance there is an episode of Penn & Teller "Bullshit" in which they make a fake video of Bigfoot and immediately get offers to appear on two radio shows where each offered them $5k to talk about it - because these kind of "paranormal" radio shows don't care about the truth, they just want a good story. But on the other hand there are a lot of uneducated people/ home-schooled people/ religiously brainwashed who find modern science so baffling that they are left mystified and just can't comprehend how people "can know so much" and it is very easy to manipulate them. I mean if someone already thinks that evolution is a lie and that there is a huge dark (satanic) organization manipulating government so that evolution is taught in school and Moon landings as well as feature it in mainstream media then it's not so far for them to believe that Earth is flat or any other concocted conspiracy.
So basically if you live today and you never ever read any (popular) science book then it becomes easy for swindlers to con you, because the world today is very complicated and it's easy to get out of touch if you don't self educate.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"
