I think its because most religions are silly and people, in their heart, know it.
If you are the only person to believe in the silly thing then you seem a silly person but if loads of people believe the silly thing it seems less silly.
That is why they try to convince you.

So you don't want people to believe that evolution happens and the earth is round.
You don't have to believe in those things you kind find out for yourself that they are true. gods are just stories though.
