Ugh. I know that trap. If we're going to have some kind of welfare reform, it needs to be something we address.
I was stuck in a similar trap a while back. Having debts to pay off can do that. If I made enough money to take care of myself, half of that got taken for child support and I couldn't take care of myself anymore. And I also didn't qualify for any kind of assistance anymore. The only way I managed to get out of that trap, eventually, was with a lot of help from other people and finding a good job that's within walking distance from my home. But I also worry that I'm just a hairs breath away from falling back into a similar trap.
It's really frustrating; if you ask for any kind of assistance, you're told that you shouldn't be asking for hand outs but if you do get out and work, you lose that assistance right away, which will probably cost you your job.
I ran the numbers and simply to keep my head above water I’d need to make 80K a year, I say 80k because 20 of it will end up going to taxes probably. Mind you on ssi I’m living on 8k a year. Fun right?
