I actually got a traffic charged dropped a few years ago. I was in a parking lot, got in my van, lit a smoke, and turned my ignition. Due to the angle of my air condition vents, the sudden burst of air blew the ashes into my eye. That sudden irritation in my eyes got me to forget I had my van in reverse, when I made the stupid mistake of trying to step out of my van to rub my eyes. That van started backing up and just like you see in a western rodeo, I was hanging out the door clinging to the steering wheel, trying to pull myself back into the van to control it, just like you see the cowboy take down a steer, but in my case, I failed. Because of my tugging on the steering wheel, the van did a circle out of the parking lot onto the main street . Lucky for me all the other motorists saw what was happening and stopped. I was like a fucking rag doll being drug by the van.
Fortunately for me the reverse was so slow that when it was all over, it did a circle and popped the curb and gently tapped another parked car, and put a tiny dent in it. But believe me it was NOT fun. So I do the right thing, call the police because I had damaged someone else's car. They show up, take my report, and finally the guy who owned the vehicle comes out. The cop even gave me a breathalyzer, which I passed because I was just stupid, not drunk.
So a month or two later I show up to court, and the cop that day gave me great advice. He said that if I simply show up with proof of insurance, and since nobody was hurt, he advised me to take my proof of insurance to court and ask that the charge be dismissed. That was exactly what I did, and while my insurance rate went up, I didn't get any points on my licence because the court agreed to dismiss the charges.
