Yet, somehow, we all play along with "theology" as if it were a real thing. Or any sort of academia.

Why, you ask?
Because many of those that hold to various theologies and god beliefs, have been known to: start wars in the name of some god or another, fly planed into buildings at 400 MPH, want to have theological based pseudoscience taught in public schools, want to persecute LGBTQ people, want to have their theological based morality legislated into law, etc, etc, etc.
You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.
