Hey, it's all part of growing up. I personally use the child-of-Britain analogy (you can even see the family resemblance in our flag).
Circa 1750: America is part of the happy family (even Franklin wrote a poem about how nothing could divide us).
1770s: America goes through adolescent rebellion.
1776: America leaves the house.
1787: "Woah, this is harder than it seemed at the time. How do mom and dad do it again?"
And so we copied their system of government, replaced the king with an elected president, changed a few other names, spun the judiciary away from the executive branch into its own third branch and codified it all into a Constitution.
I'm apparently not the first to look at it that way. See the Anime series "Hetalia".
