Just FYI - no one is required to respect anyone else’s beliefs and declining to do so is in no way a measure of decency.

The problem arises, when theists make their god beliefs such a huge part of their mental makeup, that, when we do not respect their beliefs, they take it as not respecting them.
We laugh at their silly, unsupported, god beliefs, they think we are disrespecting their entirety as a person.
People earn respect, beliefs, not so much
You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.
