Indeed had it worked the US pacific fleet would have scrap which would helped. Though it would not  have won the war  .Another interesting fact Yamamoto got his inspiration for the attack from a British fictional work called the THE GREAT PACIFIC WAR and The British Airforce Attack on th Italian port of Taranto during the previous war
It was actually Swordfish from the Royal Navy, not the RAF.

And Homer Wallin's book on the Pearl Harbor salvage operation illustrated that sinking ships in shallow harbors is almost a waste of time.
