He may have won those awards in the past, but that’s not the issue. The issue is: what is he doing for race relations now? Linus Pauling won a Nobel for Chemistry in 1954 for his pioneering work in biochemistry. And after that, he got a bug up his ass about Vitamin C and devoted the rest of his life to pursuing bullshit lines of inquiry about the effectiveness of Vitamin C. Another Nobel winning biochemist, Kary Mullis, wins in 1993 for creating the PCR, one of the most important tools in the field. Afterward, he ends up denying HIV causes AIDS and claiming he had a close encounter with a glowing green alien raccoon.
In the early days, he may well have done what he could to help race relations. But now, we have a president who defends white supremacists, calls Mexicans rapists and thieves, tells congresswomen of color to go back to where they came if they don’t like his policies (even though 3 out of the 4 women in question were born in the US), uses a pandemic to race-bait, and tweets out phrases historically associated with cops who attacked civil rights protesters.
If those old awards are supposed to reflect views he currently holds, you’re going to have to acknowledge that there’s a contradiction between that and what he’s done for the past couple years.
On a more personal note, one of my favorite films is Roman Polanski’s Repulsion. It’s a film about a young woman being haunted by her past traumas, and I don’t think there’s a film of that era that gives the viewer such a vivid insight into what such trauma does to people. And yet, 12 years after this film was made, he was arrested for visiting the same traumas on a 13-year-old girl as the film heavily implies his heroine went through, and he’s since admitted to it. Because of that, I’m not going to deny his crimes, even as I admire his art. I accept that there’s a contradiction here, and if there’s a difference in this case, it’s that it’s a lot easier to make hollow words and gestures of racial togetherness when it’s expected of you than it is to take an unflinching look at the trauma of sexual assault when nobody else is, so it’s a lot easier for me to think in Trump’s case, it’s just a PR thing.
