The point in my OP is that humans no matter what side they are on, have tendency to focus on the short term, and are tribal.
It is sad and scary, that today, that we have an orange turd, using the exact same tactics of scapegoating, vilification, and blind loyalty that lead to the horrors of things like Pearl Harbor and the Holocaust.
Except that the holocaust did happen. One of the things that allowed it to happen was that no one could imagine it occurring in the first place. Sure, massacres and ethnic cleansing weren't new, but organised slaughter on an industrial, international scale was horrifyingly new. The US using atomic bombs was similar. In both cases, the terrifying reality of both acts helped to ensure they weren't repeated. But we absolutely have to stay vigilant.
