Faith generally can mean a few things
1. complete trust or confidence in someone or something.
2. strong belief in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual conviction rather than proof.
As I understand John, he uses the word in the first meaning clearly though when taking about religious faith you are also talking about the second one.
