Where did you get this stat from? I'm not saying you're wrong - I'm just curious if it's really true and on what level is the poverty. Poverty in the states isn't anything like poverty in India.
Sorry for late reply, only just seen it. I got it from a NYtimes column on my flight home, it was a slagging of that prick Paulsen who basically said he pays more than his fair share and society owes him type thing etc.
Also, it's a bit off to compare USA to India, one has the biggest economy were equality should be easy and poverty should not exist, the other has an out of control population problem and hordes of corrupt politicians everywhere. India is improving(although obviously has massive problems), America appears to be going backwards with equality and education.
