I say it hasn't and won't because these are facts. We can believe that we shouldn't go out of our way to kill deer. We can believe (and, fwiw, the op does actually believe) that killing for sport is Bad™. Still, the facts of deer remain facts. They're woodland rats with horns. A plague that we've created, that Nature has no way of dealing with. If we ever get the Z - I garauntee you it will come from deer. They already have it. It's just waiting to cross over.
