Quote:Authoritarianism is a form of government characterized by the rejection of political plurality, the use of a strong central power to preserve the political status quo, and reductions in the rule of law, separation of powers, and democratic voting.

That's an odd question as a follow up to the one before it. I havent read it, but from the blurb..
Quote:The Myth of the Rational Voter: Why Democracies Choose Bad Policies is a 2007 book by the economist Bryan Caplan, in which the author challenges the idea that voters are reasonable people whom society can trust to make laws. Rather, Caplan contends that voters are irrational in the political sphere and have systematically ideas concerning economics.
....I'd say that he's not arguing with a straw man in that particular, though for all I know the book is full of straw to try and sell his contention that we might not be rational voters and might not be very good at governing by popular vote. Every time people vote against their own interests they provide anecdotal evidence for this claim..but often enough, a deeper exploration of their motivations will show that they were at least acting with respect to their interests how they saw them - and this is rational behavior. We can be rational and wrong. We can rationally do terrible things.
Rationality, getting it right, and doing good..are not interchangeable.....just as something being bad is not interchangeable with it's non-existence or falsehood.
