Why is Jesus Circumcised and not the rest of the christians ?
Quote:The circumcision of Jesus is an event from the life of Jesus, according to the Gospel of Luke, which states in verse 2:21 that Jesus was circumcised eight days after his birth (traditionally January 1). This is in keeping with the Jewish law which holds that males should be circumcised eight days after birth during a Brit milah ceremony, at which they are also given their name. The circumcision of Christ became a very common subject in Christian art from the 10th century onwards, one of numerous events in the Life of Christ to be frequently depicted by artists. It was initially seen only as a scene in larger cycles, but by the Renaissance might be treated as an individual subject for a painting, or form the main subject in an altarpiece.

I was reading through some online content about the gospel of Luke and found this .

I did not know this until 2 days ago .

Jesus got circumcised so you wouldn't have to.

Not the rest of the Christians?! But Christians are regularly circumcised in US so it's not actually abandoned. Indeed, even the Bible claims that many of non Jewish nations practiced circumcision Jeremiah 9:25-26 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will punish all who are circumcised only in the flesh— Egypt, Judah, Edom, Ammon, Moab and all who live in the wilderness in distant places. For all these nations are really uncircumcised, and even the whole house of Israel is uncircumcised in heart.”

So if you can get "circumcised only in the flesh" you can probably get circumcised in other "non fleshy" ways.

Jesus was circumcised because he was Jewish.  The followers of Jesus are, for the most part, non-Jewish.

Most of the commandments in the five books of Moses are commandments for the Children of Israel only. The commandment to circumcise was given to Abraham and his descendants. Muslims circumcise since they say that they are descended from Ishmael, one of Abraham's sons. The followers of Jesus are not Children of Israel. There is, and always has been, an Israelite religion for non-Jews. That's the Noachide faith. Noachides have never been required to practice circumcision.

This is an example of the big changes that happened when Christianity got started.

At the very beginning the disciples were Jewish, and there was some discussion about how much followers of Christ had to keep Jewish law. If you read the New Testament looking for examples of this, you see that there are several cases. In the gospels, Jesus himself says that Jewish diet laws don't count any more. Then in Paul there are other examples.

If you want to be practical and a bit cynical, you can say that it's easier to get new followers when the rules are easier. Roman people really liked seafood.

On the other hand, the Christian movement is a kind of internalization. The specific laws that used to apply get turned into more general rules like "love everybody" or "the law isn't in a book it's in your heart." In a way this is more difficult, because it's easier to go through a checklist of rules than to be confident that you have actually loved your neighbor.

(All of this is what Christians say. Obviously, Jews will have a different explanation about what the rules mean.)

One way I think of it: when your child is six years old, it doesn't make sense to say to him "be careful." He doesn't know what "careful" is. So you say specific things like "don't talk to strangers," "come straight home," etc. When he's older you can say things like "be good" and he'll know a little better what that means.

In Judaism, the Bris Milah ((circumcision) is a very big deal, it is a symbol of keeping the covenant between God and Abraham.. Baby boys are circumcised 8 days after birth, by a specialist rabbi, called a Moheh, without anaesthetics. Baby is given a shot of wine first. Baby then screams a lot and everyone else has a party.

Interestingly, the US has the greatest number of non religious circumcisions in the world.

((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((9)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

The article quoted below is worth a read.

The role of infant circumcision in the United States of America is mysterious. The US is the only country in the world where the majority of baby boys have part of their penises cut off for non-religious reasons. Yet this extraordinary custom is very much taken for granted. If it were being introduced today, it would certainly be rejected as barbaric and un-American.

That's one of the worst translations I have ever seen. For example, there are several words completely missing from the translation. The verse talks about all of those who pull the corners of their hair back (the Jewish commandment of peyos) who are living in the wilderness. And then your translation inserts words that aren't there. It doesn't say that the nations are 'really' uncircumcised. And it doesn't say 'even' the whole house of Israel. This verse absolutely doesn't say that all uncircumcised people are going to be destroyed. It is saying that it those who maintain the physical characteristics of Jewishness (circumcision and peyos) but not Jewish hearts are going to be destroyed.

I correct people on this one all the time. There has always been a companion faith to Judaism for non-Jews. It's actually commanded in the OT-- when a non-Jew brings a sacrifice to  the Temple, their sacrifice is to be accepted. We call non-Jewish worshipers of the Israelite deity 'Noachides'. Noachides aren't required to follow most commandments of the OT. They can eat pork and shrimp. So any Jews who were looking to recruit some non-Jews would not have had to create an easier religion for them.

The xian faith seems to have been tailor made to be offensive to Jewish sensibilities. People don't realize this. It is not just a different religion to us. It is a religion that we can't have anything to do with. It is forbidden for a Jew to even go into a church. A Jew can go into a mosque. A Jew can pray in a mosque. But not a church. It really does seem to have been made toxic for Jews by design.

Thank you! I had never heard of this before.

I won't repeat my mistake.

Yes, though I'm not aware of all of it, there is clearly some weird antipathy here.

Some oedipal? It certainly seems Freudian.
