Same reaon I carried a flare pistol, whistle, VHF radio, life jackets and an hand bilge pump in my sailboat.
I probably would never need them - and indeed didn't.
But I would never leave the dock without them.

Because your methods tend to be more likely to result in someone innocent being shot.
I had a roommate who was the so-called "responsible" gun owner and she wanted to carry her gun with her everywhere. Just in case she needed it. She had a friend who pulled it on me because I caught her stealing from me. Yeah, guns are dangerous and so are people who obsess over them.
