Well someone should have told them that spitting on the floor won't make them pretty.

Well, it won't.
But now I think of it, did they actually speak english?

Some of them spoke a little English.

That was probably a signal of their disapproval, as you probably figured out. Like I generally let people know of my disapproval of them by ignoring them completely, some do that by spitting on the floor. I can't do that since I also spit on the floor casually, mostly outdoors, so people can't really tell if I'm just doing my thing or signalling my hostility towards them.
