Ah, the devil and the communists. It works like this: religion convinces gullible people that it is a force for good and that all they need is to amass a lot of money so that they can help the less fortunate people. So when they gather billions of dollars, people start to wonder why haven't the less fortunate people been fixed, and then the people who run that religion (who are living in castles and wear expensive jewelry by now) simply blame their own failure on demons and communists.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"
