It doesn't matter that you didn't use it as a slur, it's STILL a slur. The rule clearly states that when you are using one of these words, it must be altered in one of the suggested manners.
The reason that the rule doesn't apply to religionists is that religion is a choice. Race, sex, gender, ethnicity, etc. are not choices.
