Got the paint ordered and it's set to be here sometime next week. Thank you @brewer for posting that video. It was crucial help in researching for this. I also briefly looked into Testor's enamel but since it's not made to hold up in outdoor conditions, I went ahead and sprang for the 1-shot high-gloss oil-based lettering enamel.
The figures I'll be doing are Jane Jetson next to a wood plane on one side of the car and Jane Porter(from Disney's Tarzan) next to a graphical depiction of a plane on the other side. This is what my father wanted. Both are going to be about a foot tall, no bigger. So, it should be straightforward.
When the paint comes, I'll be practicing on a couple of scrap pieces of metal for a few days. There's always a learning curve when I first encounter a new medium, so, I want to fiddle with it freely for a bit before going at the car. I'll post pics as I go.
