Why do you think your neighbors expect something from you?

Sounds to me like they see a man alone with his cat and his whistling empties and they send over food. Chances are they make more than plenty are are being neighborly.

Buying them a case of beer would be a nice gesture but I don't think they are plying you with tacos in the hopes that you will spring for a cold one.

Just take it as human kindness and move on.
